Role overview

The Managing Quantity Surveyor is part of the senior commercial team, protecting company interests across contracts from tender through delivery and final account.

The role assesses risk and opportunity, limits exposure, recovers entitlement and supports business performance.

This is a client-facing role working with delivery and pre-contract tendering teams and contributing to business strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Provide commercial oversight for multiple programmes and projects and work with clients, client representatives, third-party agencies and internal stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement project-specific commercial and contract strategies; negotiate and manage agreements to mitigate risks and optimise opportunities.
  • Review contract specifications and scopes, identify gaps and risks, and support development of risk management plans.
  • Manage project cashflow and timely interim payment applications; coordinate project financial matters with Finance.
  • Review prospective contracts at tender stage and raise risk concerns with clients.
  • Support delivery teams on contractual issues, entitlement recovery, variations and changes affecting cost or programme.
  • Coordinate supplier and subcontract package appointments, negotiations and agreements; develop and resolve final accounts.
  • Seek or provide legal opinions and advise on contractual issues; lead escalation of disputes through resolution forums.
  • Mentor and train staff, present commercial performance, maintain monthly reporting and improve commercial management processes.
  • Work across delivery, procurement, finance and technical functions; maintain professional development and current standards.

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • At least 10 years of experience in a similar role.
  • An honours degree in a relevant construction or quantity surveying qualification.
  • Chartered Surveyor status is preferred.
  • Competent understanding of international, local and bespoke contract forms, with FIDIC, NEC, IChemE and JCT given as examples.
  • Experience compiling and drafting contractual entitlements is essential.
  • Civil engineering sector experience is preferred.

Working approach

  • The role is client-facing and involves collaboration with project delivery teams, clients and other stakeholders.
  • The postholder may need to work autonomously.
