Legal Firm Accountant

Overview

Key Responsibilities

• Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger maintenance
• Handle client billing, legal fee invoicing, and trust account reconciliation with accuracy and confidentiality
• Track retainers, case-related expenses, and client cost allocations
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports
• Ensure proper recording and monitoring of legal firm revenue streams and expenditures
• Reconcile bank accounts and client trust accounts on a regular basis
• Collaborate with legal professionals and administrative staff to ensure accurate financial documentation
• Support budgeting and forecasting for firm operations and departmental expenses
• Assist in audit preparation and ensure compliance with accounting standards (IFRS) and regulatory requirements
• Maintain strict confidentiality of financial and client-related data
• Identify opportunities to improve financial processes and efficiency within the firm

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
• Proven experience in accounting, preferably within a legal firm, consultancy, or professional services environment
• Strong understanding of billing systems, trust accounting, and service-based revenue models
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP systems
• Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
• Ability to handle confidential and sensitive financial information with integrity
• Good communication skills for coordination with legal and administrative teams

Preferred Skills

• Experience working in law firms or professional services companies
• Knowledge of legal billing systems and client trust accounting procedures
• Familiarity with IFRS and financial reporting standards
• Professional certifications such as CPA, CMA, or ACCA are an advantage
