Role overview

The Lead UX Designer owns the customer experience of Armstrong's next-generation product and solution selection tool for sellers, partners, and customers.

The role sets the platform's UX vision and direction and leads the design team, partnering with product, architecture, vendors, sales, customer service, and order-entry leaders.

The tool supports product and system selection, configuration, quotation, and order submission.

Key accountabilities

  • Set UX vision, strategy, and standards for the tool and own the experience from sign-in through selection, configuration, quotation, and order submission.
  • Lead and mentor the UX design team, review work, and foster user-centered design across development.
  • Own UX research; define user personas and journey maps; turn findings into a prioritized roadmap with the product manager.
  • Set principles for full-portfolio solutions and persona-based experiences tailored to users' roles.
  • Own the design system and content guidelines, including accessibility standards such as WCAG 2.2 AA.
  • Define UX requirements and lead usability assessment for platform-vendor evaluation; determine necessary platform configuration.
  • Direct AI-assisted experiences such as guided recommendations and automated validation, ensuring they are transparent, explainable, and easy to override.
  • Set usability and adoption criteria for regional rollouts and approve go-live readiness.
  • Own experience measures including task completion, time to quote, errors, abandonment, and satisfaction; lead UX contributions to NPS and B2Q targets.
  • Represent UX with senior stakeholders and align business, technology, and vendor partners on experience decisions.

Education and experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction or Industrial Design, Cognitive Psychology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • A master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction or a related field is an asset.
  • At least 10 years of UX or product-design experience for complex web applications, including at least 3 years leading an end-to-end product experience and leading or mentoring designers.
  • Experience with B2B transactional tools such as CPQ, product configurators, e-commerce, or ERP/CRM front ends; engineered or highly configurable products are preferred.
  • Experience leading UX for a legacy-platform replacement, including vendor-platform evaluation or configuration and phased user migration.
  • Experience designing for multiple user groups across regions and markets.
  • HVAC, building-systems, or industrial-equipment experience is an asset.
  • Relevant UX or accessibility certifications, including Nielsen Norman Group UX Certification, are an asset.

Skills

  • Expertise in user-centered design and design thinking across research, interaction, information architecture, and visual design.
  • Ability to run UX research and turn findings into strategy and a design roadmap.
  • Experience building and governing design systems; advanced design-tool skills such as Figma.
  • Strong knowledge of accessibility and inclusive design, and enough understanding of front-end and API-driven architectures to work with technical peers.
  • Ability to use product analytics and user feedback, including NPS and task metrics, to measure experience quality and guide investment.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and influencing skills across executives, sales, engineers, customers, and partners.
  • Customer-focused leadership, coaching, consensus-building, and clear, authentic communication.

Location and travel

  • The position is based at the SAA office in Toronto, Canada.
  • Travel may be required to operations in the USA, UK, Continental Europe, India, and China.
