About Adaptive

Adaptive is a product-led financial technology company working in capital, commodity, and digital markets.

The company builds technology for investment banks, investment managers, fintechs, and capital markets service providers.

Role overview

Build Aeron Sequencer, a product applying state machine replication to capital markets.

Work on distributed systems that enable engineering teams to build performant, reliable software.

The hands-on role offers influence over product decisions, architecture, engineering practices, and technical communication.

What you will do

  • Analyze, design, discuss, and develop distributed systems based on replicated state machines.
  • Write clean, efficient, maintainable, self-documenting Java code.
  • Design and evolve messaging protocols and software libraries.
  • Troubleshoot and debug Java applications and distributed systems.
  • Apply testing, benchmarking, measurement, and profiling to improve correctness and performance.
  • Participate in code reviews, pairing, and technical discussions.
  • Contribute to product decisions and keep up to date with relevant engineering practices.
  • Communicate technical decisions and priorities to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What you will bring

  • Experience designing, building, debugging, and operating distributed systems.
  • Strong experience developing server-side software in Java.
  • Experience designing and evolving messaging protocols or software libraries.
  • Experience using testing for software quality, including correctness and performance.
  • Experience measuring, benchmarking, and profiling components or systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A collaborative approach, with interest in sharing knowledge and learning.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands by long-term value and explain priorities.
  • Confidence to challenge the status quo and suggest technical or cultural improvements.

Useful additional experience

  • Experience in one or more of the following is valuable but not required: messaging technologies or replicated state machines; low-latency, high-throughput, or predictable-performance systems; property-based or deterministic simulation testing.
  • Useful areas also include FIX or ITCH, OMS, EMS or exchange systems, C or C++, Gradle or GitHub Actions, AWS, GCP or Azure, Kubernetes, pre-sales or customer-facing technical discussions, and public technical communication.

Working model

  • Adaptive supports a highly flexible hybrid working model.

Benefits

  • Benefits include 23 days of holiday, partial group insurance and public transport pass costs, pension contributions matched up to 5% of annual salary, and partial gym membership costs.
  • The company describes wellbeing support, work-life balance, and an inclusive culture.

Interview process

  • The interview process begins with a recruiter conversation and includes a technical stage; the provided description ends before the process details are complete.
