Role overview

The instrumentation engineer handles engineering, inspection, testing, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, commissioning, and maintenance of actuators, automated valves, positioners, and related instrumentation and control systems.

The role includes technical documentation, client coordination, workshop activities, and site support.

Actuator and valve automation expertise

  • Practical knowledge of pneumatic, electric, and hydraulic actuators, control valves, on/off valves, positioners, solenoid valves, limit switches, and associated accessories.
  • Actuator types include spring-return, double-acting, rack-and-pinion, and scotch-yoke designs.
  • Accessories include position transmitters, I/P converters, air filter regulators, volume boosters, quick exhaust valves, pneumatic relays, junction boxes, local control stations, and manual overrides.

Actuator engineering

  • Select and specify actuators based on valve type, torque or thrust, operating conditions, and fail-safe requirements; perform or review sizing calculations.
  • Review datasheets, technical specifications, P&IDs, drawings, and vendor documents; determine operating torque, safety factors, pressure, voltage, speed, duty, and mechanical compatibility.
  • Review actuator fail positions, including fail open, fail close, and fail in position; recommend selection, replacement, repair, or modification.

Actuator inspection and maintenance

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and test pneumatic actuators; check pressure, travel, torque, spring operation, leaks, and mechanical condition.
  • Supervise actuator dismantling, refurbishment, reassembly, and functional testing.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, commission, and maintain electric actuators; check motors, torque settings, switches, feedback, controls, electrical connections, and operating parameters.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot hydraulic systems, verify pressure and stroke, identify leaks or failures, and support repairs, testing, and commissioning.

Instrumentation and positioners

  • Install, calibrate, configure, troubleshoot, and functionally test valve automation accessories and positioners.
  • Perform valve travel calibration and zero/span adjustments; verify 4–20 mA signals and position feedback, configure applicable protocols, and troubleshoot signal or communication failures.
  • Perform loop checks between field instruments, PLC/DCS systems, and actuators.

Troubleshooting and documentation

  • Diagnose failures, perform root-cause analysis, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support breakdown and emergency maintenance, develop preventive maintenance requirements, maintain equipment and failure records, and identify critical spare parts.
  • Prepare and review actuator and valve datasheets, sizing calculations, inspection and repair reports, test and calibration certificates, functional test reports, and pressure test reports.

Requirements

  • Strong practical knowledge of pneumatic, electric, and hydraulic actuators; valve automation systems; control valves and on/off valves; positioners; solenoid valves; limit switches; and associated accessories.
  • Ability to select and specify actuators based on valve type, torque or thrust requirements, operating conditions, and fail-safe requirements.
  • Ability to perform or review actuator sizing calculations and review technical datasheets, specifications, P&IDs, drawings, and vendor documents.
  • Knowledge of actuator operating torque, safety factors, air pressure, voltage, speed, duty requirements, and valve-actuator compatibility.
  • Knowledge of valve automation accessories, including positioners, solenoid valves, limit switches, transmitters, I/P converters, air filter regulators, and control accessories.
  • Ability to install, calibrate, configure, and troubleshoot positioners and instrumentation, including 4–20 mA signals and valve travel calibration.
  • Ability to perform loop checks between field instruments, PLC/DCS systems, and actuators.
  • Ability to prepare and review technical records such as datasheets, sizing calculations, inspection and repair reports, test certificates, and calibration certificates.
