Role overview

HVAC-R maintenance and repair

• Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance according to job plans.
• Installs, modifies, repairs, constructs, fabricates, troubleshoots, and maintains refrigeration, air-conditioning, ventilation, and related controls and equipment, including units up to 35 tons.
• Installs, adjusts, and calibrates thermostats and electronic, pressure, and pneumatic controls.
• May respond to emergency calls at any hour to repair equipment using vehicles, tools, and necessary parts and materials.
• Identifies and corrects equipment problems to maintain safe operation, protect property and systems, and prevent service reductions.
• Diagnoses unusual malfunctions, tests cooling efficiency, and adjusts, calibrates, and aligns components within design limits.
• Inspects work for compliance with procedures, safety standards, and technical publications.
• Provides technical guidance to facilities personnel and trains coworkers in preventive maintenance and mechanical repairs.
• May operate Mechanical Handling Equipment when trained; performs other assigned duties.

Minimum requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Five years of practical refrigeration and air-conditioning experience; related education or technical training may substitute for up to two years of required experience.
• Organizational skills and beginner-level ability to understand, speak, read, and write English.
• Ability to read and understand technical data, plans, blueprints, and publications for USAF refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.
• Valid home-country driver's license and ability to obtain a host-nation driver's license.
• May be required to operate material handling equipment.
• Must be physically capable of required duties, including lifting, pushing, or pulling at least 50 pounds and extensive equipment handling.
• Must be able to travel domestically and internationally.

Work environment and safety

• Work takes place in a maintenance shop or warehouse and may require extended periods outdoors.
• May be exposed to extreme noise from operating equipment.
• Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment and follow prescribed safety procedures.
