The Human-Centered Design Manager connects user needs with technical execution across healthcare products.
The role leads qualitative research, journey mapping, prototyping, and usability testing for physicians, clinical staff, billers, front-desk teams, and patients.
Design work should support intuitive, accessible products and account for clinical workflow and patient-safety concerns.
Research and design responsibilities
- Conduct contextual inquiries, interviews, field observations, and surveys with users.
- Use client feedback and support tickets to surface usability problems.
- Create personas, journey maps, service blueprints, and system workflows for clinical, operational, and billing processes.
- Present research findings to product and executive leadership.
- Facilitate design workshops and create low- to high-fidelity wireframes and interactive prototypes.
- Design AI-powered features that keep clinicians in control and make generated output easy to review and correct.
Testing, collaboration, and leadership
- Plan and analyze usability tests and iterate designs before and during development.
- Evaluate medication management and e-prescribing workflows and support ONC Safety-Enhanced Design testing.
- Work with product managers, business analysts, and engineers in Agile/Scrum teams through product release.
- Apply accessibility standards and HIPAA-safe research practices.
- Build HCD research operations, templates, and standards; mentor designers and researchers.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Human-Centered Design, Human-Factors Engineering, Interaction Design, Cognitive Psychology, or a related field.
- 3 to 6+ years of professional HCD, UX design, or user research experience, including enterprise or regulated-industry experience.
- Proficiency in Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD; qualitative research methods; usability testing frameworks; and Agile/Scrum delivery flows.
- Working knowledge of Section 508 and WCAG standards and their practical application.
- Strong empathy, verbal storytelling, analytical problem-solving, and evidence-based design decision-making.
- Portfolio or case studies demonstrating end-to-end research, synthesis, prototyping, and measurable impact.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience designing EHR, practice management, revenue cycle, telehealth, or other health IT products; familiarity with clinical workflows is advantageous.
- Knowledge of ONC Safety-Enhanced Design, NISTIR 7804, or ISO 9241-210 is preferred.
- Experience with AI-assisted design, remote research tools, unmoderated testing, product analytics, mentoring, or a medical practice setting is preferred.
Role context
The described day-to-day work may include virtual or on-site observation of specialty practices, product stand-ups, journey mapping, design workshops, and usability testing.
