- Obtain and maintain at least one (1) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Medium/Heavy Vehicle Certification [T1-T8] as specified in ASE's Certification Test Series within six (6) months of appointment.

- Special Requirements: Positions requiring a CDL or positions of a safety-sensitive nature are subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal regulations.
General Purpose
Under general supervision, maintain and repair heavy city vehicles and equipment; maintain and repair gasoline and diesel-powered heavy and light construction and other power-driven equipment and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.
Typical Duties
Maintain, repair, and recondition heavy city vehicles and equipment, gasoline and diesel-powered heavy and light construction equipment, and other power-driven equipment. Involves: Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and rebuilding of heavy equipment in accordance with work order instructions, disassemble units, measure parts for wear, inspect parts for damage, analyze and determine necessary corrective measures, replace worn or damaged parts, and reassemble units in accordance with technical manuals, diagrams, and instructions. Diagnose and repair complex body components including hydraulic systems, electronic actuators, valves, and wiring on heavy trucks. Determine the nature and cause of equipment malfunctions or breakdowns in the field. Make necessary adjustments, replacements, or repairs to maintain equipment operation, or prepare heavy equipment for towing. Refer temporary or emergency repair status to supervisor for appropriate corrective action. Disassemble and overhaul heavy equipment systems and components, air conditioning units, engines and transmissions, hydraulic and other power-operated units, and test overhauled heavy equipment to assure proper operation. Determine the need and extent of repair and service to vehicles by road test, use of diagnostic devices; visually inspect equipment for excessive wear, damage, and safety of operation, or questioning of drivers about performance problems, and report defects, malfunctions, and unsafe conditions to supervisor. Test, adjust, and repair emissions and electrical systems including batteries, alternators, wire harnesses, lights, computerized ignition systems, and related electrical units. Fabricate, modify, and repair assemblies and equipment components using approved cutting and welding techniques. Conduct safety checks on all equipment. Inspect and test completed work to ensure repairs were performed according to standards. Prepare reports and maintain records of work activities. Prepare requisitions and purchase orders for supplies from vendors. Maintain cleanliness of work area and tools.
Perform related duties as required.
Involves: Performing duties of immediate supervisor or coworkers as necessary to ensure continuity of operations during absences.
