The role provides hands-on exposure across concept design, prototyping, manufacturing, regulatory approval, and commercial launch.

Product design and development

  • Participate in new product development and improvements to existing designs and processes.
  • Support design optimization using FEA, tolerance analysis, and Design for Manufacturing principles.
  • Prototype designs using in-house 3D printing and machining capabilities.
  • Create 3D CAD models and detailed drawings for oral appliance components and manufacturing tooling.
  • Transfer designs with internal manufacturing teams and contract manufacturers into high-volume production.

Testing and validation

  • Execute mechanical performance, durability, and biocompatibility test protocols.
  • Analyze test data using statistical methods and summarize findings in technical reports.
  • Contribute to design verification and validation documentation.
  • Support root cause analysis for manufacturing and field issues.

Collaboration

  • Partner with Quality and Regulatory teams on design control documentation and with production teams on design transfer.
  • Work with the Commercial team to understand user needs and the competitive landscape.
  • Present design concepts and test results, support clinical studies, and integrate user feedback.

Essential qualifications

  • Completed or soon-to-be-completed bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in mechanics, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Analytical problem-solving, attention to detail, strong communication, and interest in healthcare technology are required.

Advantageous experience

  • Internship, placement, or capstone project experience is advantageous.
  • SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software experience is advantageous.
  • Exposure to FEA, CFD, simulation, biomaterials, medical device design, human factors, DOE, statistical analysis, additive manufacturing, or 3D printing is advantageous.

Development exposure

  • The role provides exposure to medical device development, design controls, ISO 13485, FDA and TGA frameworks, ISO 14971 risk management, and design verification and validation.
  • Additional exposure includes biocompatible materials, oral healthcare applications, commercialisation, manufacturing scale-up, and regulated healthcare environments.

Work arrangement

  • The role is based at SomnoMed's Sydney-area R&D facility in Crows Nest with hybrid working flexibility.

Compensation

  • Pay is listed at $70,000 per year.

Benefits and progression

  • The role offers mentoring, a graduate-to-senior engineering progression pathway, exposure to the full product lifecycle, employee benefits, and work-from-home flexibility.
