Role Overview
The Geoscience Consultant serves as a technical authority and strategic advisor within the Exploration & Production (E&P) division.
This role is central to subsurface evaluation, prospect generation, risk assessment, and resource estimation across the full asset lifecycle from frontier exploration through appraisal, development, and production phases.
The incumbent will integrate multidisciplinary data, provide geoscientific leadership, and collaborate with petrophysics, reservoir engineering, drilling, and commercial teams to maximize the value of the company's hydrocarbon portfolio.
Subsurface Interpretation & Prospect Generation
- Lead integrated geological and geophysical interpretation of 2D/3D seismic data, well logs, core data, and regional studies to identify and mature exploration prospects and leads.
- Develop and maintain detailed geological models including structural, stratigraphic, and sedimentological frameworks for key basins and play types.
- Generate and rank a portfolio of exploration prospects, quantifying volumetrics (GRV, STOIIP, GIIP) and geological risk using probabilistic methods.
- Conduct basin analysis, source rock evaluation, and petroleum systems modeling using software such as PetroMod or BasinMod.
Seismic Interpretation & Geophysical Analysis
- Perform advanced interpretation using industry-standard tools (Petrel, Kingdom, OpendTect), including attribute analysis, AVO/DHI evaluation, and inversion studies.
- Collaborate with geophysicists to design seismic acquisition programs and evaluate seismic processing quality and fit-for-purpose outputs.
- Integrate seismic data with well control to calibrate stratigraphic and structural models.
Well Planning & Drilling Support
- Provide geoscientific input to well prognosis documents, including formation tops, expected lithologies, pore pressure forecasts, and geological objectives.
- Monitor drilling operations in real-time, updating subsurface models with incoming formation evaluation, mud log, and MWD/LWD data.
- Conduct post-well analysis and documentation to capture learnings and update the geological model.
Resource Estimation & Reserves Assessment
- Prepare and peer-review PRMS-compliant resource estimates (Prospective Resources, Contingent Resources, and Reserves) for exploration and appraisal assets.
- Apply Monte Carlo simulation and decision-tree methods for uncertainty quantification and portfolio risk analysis.
- Represent subsurface findings in CPR (Competent Person Reports) and regulatory submissions.
Technical Leadership & Mentorship
- Act as technical mentor and coach to junior and mid-level geoscientists, supporting their professional development and competency frameworks.
- Lead and facilitate peer reviews, technical assurance gates (ToR/FDP), and stage-gate evaluations for exploration and appraisal projects.
- Present complex geoscientific findings to senior management, joint venture partners, investment committees, and regulatory bodies.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Work in integrated project teams with reservoir engineers, petrophysicists, drilling engineers, facilities planners, and commercial analysts.
- Engage with national oil companies (NOCs), government regulatory agencies, and JV partners on geoscientific matters.
- Support new business development activities including farm-in/farm-out evaluations, license round submissions, and M&A due diligence.
Education
- Bachelor's degree (BSc) in Geoscience, Geology, Geophysics, or Earth Sciences — required.
- Master's degree (MSc) or PhD in a relevant geoscience discipline — strongly preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 8 years of progressive experience in subsurface geoscience within the oil and gas industry.
- Proven track record in exploration, appraisal, and/or development geoscience across at least two different geological settings or basins.
- Demonstrated experience in multi-disciplinary integrated team environments.
- Prior experience working in or alongside national oil companies, IOCs, or independent E&P operators.
Technical Skills
- Advanced proficiency in seismic interpretation software (Petrel, Kingdom, OpendTect, or equivalent).
- Proficiency in basin modelling software (PetroMod, BasinMod, or equivalent).
- Working knowledge of formation evaluation, well log interpretation, and petrophysical principles.
- Strong understanding of PRMS resource classification framework and associated reporting standards.
- Familiarity with AVO analysis, seismic inversion, and geomechanical concepts.
- Experience with GIS-based tools (ArcGIS, QGIS) for regional mapping and data integration.
Preferred Skills & Competencies
- Professional certification: AAPG Certified Petroleum Geologist (CPG), SEG or equivalent professional body membership.
- Experience with unconventional resources (tight oil, shale gas, coal bed methane).
- Knowledge of deepwater, HPHT, or frontier exploration environments.
- Familiarity with carbon capture (CCS) site characterization and assessment.
- Experience leading CPR processes and engaging with independent auditors.
- Proficiency with Python scripting or R for subsurface data analytics.
- Working knowledge of EAGE, SPE, and AAPG research literature and technical standards.
