Role overview
Oversees garment technical development, product specifications, fit evaluation, and apparel production readiness.
Combines technical design, garment construction, pattern development, sample evaluation, materials, and supplier coordination.
Technical development and fit
- Translates concepts, sketches, and creative briefs into technical specifications and production instructions.
- Prepares technical packs, specification sheets, construction details, measurement charts, and digital technical drawings.
- Reviews patterns, grading, size charts, garment construction, fit, prototypes, and pre-production samples.
- Identifies issues and provides correction instructions to factories, sample rooms, and manufacturing partners.
- Coordinates samples, revisions, size-set approvals, pre-production submissions, and development timelines.
Materials, production, and quality
- Recommends fabrics, trims, and components and evaluates performance characteristics such as stretch, drape, shrinkage, colorfastness, and durability where applicable.
- Coordinates fabric testing, lab dips, print submissions, embroidery samples, color approvals, and trim approvals.
- Supports costing, production feasibility, quality checkpoints, defect investigation, and corrective actions.
- Ensures products meet applicable labeling, safety, restricted-substance, and market-specific requirements.
Collaboration and improvement
- Works with design, pattern-making, merchandising, product development, production, sourcing, procurement, quality, and manufacturing teams.
- Maintains technical records and revision histories; supports seasonal collections, product innovation, and workflow improvements.
- Provides technical guidance to junior designers, product developers, and team members when required.
Qualifications and experience
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in Fashion Design, Apparel Technology, Garment Manufacturing, Textile Technology, or a related discipline.
- Relevant professional experience in technical design, apparel development, garment production, or product engineering.
- Experience with garment construction, patterns, grading, fitting, apparel manufacturing, technical packs, and product documentation.
- Practical fit-session and sample-review experience, including communicating garment corrections.
- Strong knowledge of fabrics, trims, garment components, textile characteristics, measurement tolerances, and quality control.
Tools and additional knowledge
- Proficiency in technical drawing software such as Adobe Illustrator, CLO 3D, Gerber, Lectra, or comparable tools.
- PLM systems and digital product development workflows are advantageous.
- Experience with pre-production samples and bulk production readiness is preferred.
- Textile testing, costing, labeling compliance, restricted-substance standards, and sustainable materials are beneficial or advantageous.
