Role overview

Lead a team building full-stack products, AI-enabled features, and services for Westlaw legal research.

The team will develop agentic legal research experiences and retrieval services grounded in trusted legal content.

This is a hands-on engineering leadership role spanning software, AI, cloud, delivery, and people management.

Team and technical leadership

  • Own team hiring, onboarding, performance management, and professional development for software engineers, including Senior and Staff levels.
  • Build engineering expertise in software fundamentals, information retrieval, and agentic system design; foster ownership and continuous learning.
  • Write and review code, prototype solutions, resolve critical production issues, and communicate technical concepts and trade-offs.
  • Oversee scalable user interfaces, backend services, and RESTful APIs; shape architecture, engineering standards, coding practices, and reviews.
  • Drive GenAI and LLM integration and champion DevOps ownership of build, deployment, monitoring, and reliability.
  • Ensure performance, scalability, reliability, security, and maintainability through testing, secure coding, and continuous quality evaluation.
  • Design and manage cloud-native AWS solutions; evaluate emerging tool protocols and retrieval patterns for production readiness.

AI-enabled engineering and delivery

  • Make AI-assisted and agent-driven development a team norm, with clear task specifications, human review, security guardrails, and accountability for shipped code.
  • Apply AI to code generation, review, test automation, and quality evaluation, with safeguards for security, data handling, and responsible use.
  • Monitor token use and measure AI impact on delivery speed, code quality, defect rates, productivity, and cost.
  • Deliver secure solutions aligned with product roadmaps through incremental delivery, dependency management, and success metrics.
  • Stay current with AI, cloud computing, and software engineering developments and bring relevant practices to the team.

Required qualifications

  • 8+ years of hands-on front-end and back-end software engineering building scalable web applications, including 3+ years managing engineering teams.
  • Track record shipping and operating production-grade full-stack systems at scale, while remaining hands-on in architecture, design, code review, and prototyping.
  • Production or serious prototype experience with LLMs, such as RAG, prompt and context design, evaluation, or agent workflows; daily use of AI coding tools.
  • Experience with AI agent teams and practices for review, quality, and security.
  • Strong REST API design knowledge, including resources, HTTP methods and status codes, idempotency, pagination, filtering, versioning, authentication, authorization, error handling, and documentation.
  • Strong Python proficiency; working proficiency in React or similar, plus TypeScript and Node.js.
  • Strong AWS architecture and services knowledge, with DevOps, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code experience.
  • Experience hiring, coaching, mentoring, and developing engineers, including Senior and Staff levels, and partnering cross-functionally.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder alignment, feedback, goal-setting, and decision-making in ambiguous, fast-moving settings.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience shipping production AI-driven or agentic systems, including LLM orchestration, RAG, information retrieval, agent frameworks, MCP or other tool protocols, and reliable LLM APIs.
  • Experience evaluating agents through testing, benchmarking, and behavior monitoring.
  • Experience with Python frameworks such as Django, Flask, or FastAPI.
  • Experience managing mixed front-end, back-end, and software/AI engineering teams or helping teams adopt new tools and practices.
  • Exposure to legal or other regulated professional domains.
  • AWS Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, or similar certification.

Work model

  • The posting describes a flexible hybrid work model for office-based roles.
  • Work-from-anywhere flexibility may be available for up to eight weeks per year.

Compensation

  • For Ontario, Canada, the stated base compensation range is CAD 140,600 to CAD 190,600; the role may also be eligible for an annual bonus.
  • The posting gives a separate range for eligible US locations, though the listed amounts include mixed CAD and USD currency labels.
