Role Description
This is a remote, volunteer Engineering Manager role.
The Engineering Manager will guide a small engineering team, ensuring high-quality delivery of software and technical solutions that support Philly Biotech Connect’s mission.
Day-to-day, this role includes planning and prioritizing technical work, running stand-ups or check-ins, coordinating tasks, and removing blockers for the team.
The Engineering Manager will collaborate with organizers, product stakeholders, and volunteers to define requirements and align projects with community needs.
This role also involves reviewing code or architecture, supporting integrations between tools and platforms, mentoring volunteer engineers, and helping establish lightweight processes and best practices.
Qualifications
- Strong Engineering Management and Team Leadership skills, including the ability to mentor and coordinate a small, distributed volunteer team.
- Hands-on Software Development experience, with comfort reviewing code, discussing architecture, and guiding technical decisions.
- Project Management skills to plan sprints or task lists, manage timelines, and communicate status clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience with Integration of tools, platforms, or APIs to connect systems and streamline workflows.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, especially in remote and asynchronous collaboration environments.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and operate in a low-bureaucracy, volunteer-driven setting.
- Familiarity or interest in biotech, pharma, education, or community-building is a plus.
- Prior experience in a lead, senior engineer, or engineering manager role (professional or volunteer) is strongly preferred.
