About Genio

Genio creates learning tools intended to improve knowledge, skills, and confidence.

The company describes itself as a SaaS scale-up headquartered in Leeds, with staff around the UK.

Its software is used by students at universities and colleges, and the company aims to support one million learners by 2030.

About the role

The Engineering Lead works with the CPO to lead delivery, engineering standards, and team health for a new flagship product.

The role leads through supporting Tech Leads and enabling the team rather than doing all engineering work directly.

The role reports to the Chief Product Officer and sits in the Learner Experience unit.

Delivery leadership

  • Run delivery for the Learning Experience team from prioritization through release, keeping planning, priorities, progress, and delivery visible.
  • Translate product priorities and validation goals into sequenced engineering work with the CPO.
  • Communicate what can be achieved within budget, remove blockers, and empower engineers to solve learner problems.

Standards and ways of working

  • Set engineering standards appropriate to a validation-stage product, moving quickly while applying discipline where needed.
  • Promote experimentation, fast feedback, and AI-assisted engineering across the team.
  • Ensure the team meets security and compliance standards set by Operations.

Team development and product partnership

  • Manage engineers through one-to-ones, development plans, performance management, and timely feedback.
  • Build an inclusive, collaborative culture; coach team members, address skill gaps, and participate in recruitment.
  • Partner with the Product Manager and Principal Engineer, own the engineering approach, and ensure product work ships.
  • Ensure releases include instrumentation, measurement, and learning, and help communicate company goals and vision.

Role outcomes

  • The team ships quickly and predictably so product hypotheses can be tested with learners.
  • The team iterates, measures, and learns rapidly, using AI-assisted development where it improves speed.
  • Engineering quality, security, and discipline are applied deliberately and trade-offs are made consciously.
  • Engineers receive coaching, development, clear expectations, and honest feedback.
  • Team size, tooling, and spend stay within the agreed budget, with a concrete view of what the budget can deliver.

Essential experience and capabilities

  • Experience directly leading and managing engineers, ideally in an early-stage or new-product environment.
  • Deep hands-on software engineering experience, including well-crafted, maintainable code and judgment about balancing craft with speed.
  • Strong delivery instincts, including short cycles, visible progress, and honest communication when commitments are at risk.
  • Ability to take ownership of a live problem end to end without waiting for direction.
  • Fluency with AI-assisted development and an appetite to extend what it makes possible.
  • Data proficiency to support instrumentation, measurement, and learning in product releases.

Team and working relationships

The role works closely with the CPO, Principal Engineer, Tech Leads, Engineers, Senior Data Engineer, learner research and design colleagues, Product Managers, and Principal Platform Engineer.
