About the Trust

Canal & River Trust cares for canals, rivers, docks, reservoirs, museums, archives, historic buildings, and local nature and wildlife.

The Trust aims to support wellbeing and community connection through waterways.

Role overview

The Engagement Coordinator connects people and communities with local waterways through volunteering, environmental projects, health and wellbeing initiatives, and community engagement.

The role delivers outcomes for a Sport England-funded programme, engaging inactive adults, young people, and underrepresented groups across the North West.

The work aims to increase participation and connection with local canals and rivers and support wellbeing, skills, and confidence.

Working hours

  • The role is a 30-hour-per-week pattern, typically across four days.
  • Some weekend and evening work is required to facilitate community engagement.

Location and travel

  • The role is home-based, with a local hub at the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port or Rose Grove in Burnley for collaborative working.
  • Regular travel is required across the North West, focused on Rochdale, Wigan, and Ellesmere Port.
  • The employee should be comfortable working independently for most of the week, with support available.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver activities for children, young people, and targeted community groups, particularly those living within 1 km of the canal.
  • Recruit, train, and support volunteers, including young people, and deliver Trust programmes and place-based projects.
  • Co-create inclusive volunteering, community, and recreation activities with underrepresented groups and people with additional support needs.
  • Consult communities and build relationships with partners, stakeholders, and groups facing barriers to participation.
  • Prepare progress and financial reports and support project monitoring and evaluation.
  • Work with Regional Directors and the steering group on approaches that can be adopted across the waterways network.
  • Assess risks, adjust work methods, and embed equality, diversity, inclusion, and safety in delivery.
  • Explore funding opportunities and help local groups connect with regional teams for continued support.

About you

  • Experience in community engagement and volunteering, including youth-focused project delivery.
  • Able to build positive relationships across diverse communities and stakeholder groups.
  • Confident communicator and organiser, able to manage projects, inspire volunteers, and work collaboratively.
  • Passionate about inclusion, wellbeing, and creating lasting community impact.
  • Able to work independently and travel regularly across the North West.
