Responsibilities

  • You will own the electronics roadmap for current and next-generation quantum systems. That covers schematic capture and PCB layout through to board and system-level test, and the drive architecture for QPU designs.
  • You will balance hands-on technical leadership with people management, planning and coordination across teams. As the main electronics contact for the physics, firmware, mechanical and systems teams, you will turn complex physical requirements into clear, achievable engineering plans, and you will keep improving the tooling, workflow and capability of the team.Key responsibilities include:
  • Team leadership: Lead and develop a team of three electronics engineers and play a key role in growing it through hiring. Set clear goals, run regular 1:1s and performance reviews, and build a culture of technical excellence and accountability.
  • Technical direction: Own the architecture of the electronics subsystems, including mixed-signal design, high-speed digital and signal integrity. Approve key design decisions and lead design reviews.
  • Delivery and planning: Plan, prioritise and track electronics workstreams against programme milestones, managing resourcing, schedules, risks and dependencies, and report progress to stakeholders.
  • Quality and process: Set and improve design standards, review processes, verification and test strategy (simulation, bench test, system integration) and documentation practices.
  • Productisation: Lead the move from experimental prototypes to robust, manufacturable, rack-ready production systems, working with suppliers and contract manufacturers as needed.

Requirements

  • To succeed, you will need around ten years of experience in electronics design, with a strong background in high-speed and mixed-signal electronics, proven experience leading engineers and a track record of taking hardware from concept through prototype to production on schedule. You should be able to give credible technical guidance while growing the team around you, and bring a high level of attention to detail to your own work and to the designs you review.
  • You will be comfortable in a fast-moving, highly technical environment and know when to use waterfall or agile delivery in a hardware setting. Experience with Jira and Smartsheet, exposure to cryogenic environments, RF/microwave engineering (up to 500 MHz) or Python-based test automation, and familiarity with the Sinara/ARTIQ ecosystem in a quantum or physics research setting would all be an advantage.
  • You’d be a great fit with:
  • Engineering leadership experience: A track record of managing or technically leading electronics engineers, including hiring, mentoring and performance management.
  • Strong hardware design background: Hands-on experience with mixed-signal and high-speed digital design, SPICE modelling and lab verification (oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers).
  • Altium expertise: Experience with complex schematics, rigid-flex designs and advanced signal-integrity constraints, and the ability to review and guide others' designs.
  • FPGA and high-performance hardware: Familiarity with Xilinx/Intel toolchains (Vivado/Quartus) and carriers such as the BittWare XUP series or Sinara/ARTIQ hardware.
  • High-speed interfaces: Knowledge of SFP+/QSFP-DD interfaces, 10/100G Ethernet and high-speed differential pair routing.
  • Compensation will vary based on individual factors such as education, qualifications, and experience of the final candidate(s), specific office location, and calibration against relevant market data and internal team equity. Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available. Our benefits include comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans, matching 401(k), unlimited PTO and paid holidays, parental/adoption leave, legal insurance, and a home technology stipend. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided when a candidate receives an offer of employment.

  • US Technical Jobs. The position you are applying for will require access to technology that is subject to U.S. export control and government contract restrictions. Employment with IonQ is contingent on either verifying “U.S. Person” (e.g., U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum) status for export controls and government contracts work, obtaining any necessary license, and/or confirming the availability of a license exception under U.S. export controls. Please note that in the absence of confirming you are a U.S. Person for export control and government contracts work purposes, IonQ may choose not to apply for a license or decline to use a license exception (if available) for you to access export-controlled technology that may require authorization, and similarly, you may not qualify for government contracts work that requires U.S. Persons, and IonQ may decline to proceed with your application on those bases alone. Accordingly, we will have some additional questions regarding your immigration status that will be used for export control and compliance purposes, and the answers will be reviewed by compliance personnel to ensure compliance with federal law.
  • US Non-Technical Jobs. Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum. Accordingly, we will have some additional questions regarding your immigration status that will be used for export control and compliance purposes, and the answers will be reviewed by compliance personnel to ensure compliance with federal law.
  • If you are interested in being a part of our team and mission, we encourage you to apply!
