Mission and objectives

The United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies (UN ODET) was established on 1 January 2025, with a mandate to: (a) advise the senior leadership of the United Nations on key trends in technology, so as to guide the strategic approach taken by the Organization on such issues; (b) serve as advocate and focal point for digital cooperation, through engagement with Member States, the technology industry, civil society and other stakeholders; (c) facilitate multi-stakeholder policy dialogue on digital and emerging technologies; (d) strengthen system-wide coordination within and across the United Nations system on digital and emerging technologies; (e) support the follow-up and implementation of the Global Digital Compact (A/RES/79/1 Annex 1).

Through the Under-Secretary-General and Special Envoy for Digital and Emerging Technologies, UN ODET also leads the implementation of the Secretary-General's vision on digital cooperation by working closely with various UN entities and multi-stakeholder groups, facilitating dialogue to accelerate global digital cooperation, seizing on the opportunities that are presented by technology - while mitigating the risks - so that progress towards achieving the Goals by 2030 can be made collectively, as well as carrying out other related duties and responsibilities assigned by the Secretary-General, including follow up actions from the Secretary-General's Roadmap for Digital Cooperation and the report "Our Common Agenda".

Context

UN ODET supports the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI, the first global scientific body on Artificial Intelligence, bringing together leading experts to assess how AI is transforming our lives. As the Panel advances its work through publications and meetings, clear and accessible communications will be essential to sharing its findings and engaging diverse audiences.

UN ODET is seeking a creative and detail-oriented Online Volunteer to develop visual communications materials that support the dissemination and visibility of the Panel’s work across digital platforms.

Task description

Under the guidance of ODET’s Creative Lead, the Online Volunteer will:

- Design visual assets, including social media cards, infographics, banners and promotional graphics highlighting the Panel’s activities, publications, meetings and scientific outputs. - Develop and adapt graphics for websites, social media and other digital communications channels. - Create visual materials to support the promotion of Panel publications, meetings and other activities. - Develop reusable design templates and visual layouts to support consistency across the Panel’s communications. - Apply UN ODET’s visual identity, branding and accessibility standards across all materials. - Adapt materials to the dimensions, formats and other technical requirements of different digital platforms. - Incorporate feedback and finalize materials within agreed deadlines. - Provide final materials in editable source formats and optimized, web-ready formats.

Specific themes, formats, technical requirements and delivery milestones will be agreed upon at the beginning of the assignment. During the 12-week assignment, the Online Volunteer is expected to produce approximately 20-30 social media and promotional graphics, 8-10 web banners or website visual assets, and 1-2 reusable design templates.
