Job Duties Include

• The following responsibilities and duties of this position include but is not limited to:
• Direct and supervise the movement of pedestrians across the roadway
• Monitor vehicle and pedestrian traffic management at the crossing
• Coordination of coverage for Crossing Guard absence(s)
• Mentors assigned Crossing Guards by modelling proper crossing techniques
• Educate pedestrians on safe crossing practices
• Respond to emergency issues involving vehicles and pedestrian traffic
• Report safety issues to supervisor
• Provide customer service to the pedestrians and the public
• Champion of safety in the community on behalf of the Town of Ajax

Skills/Abilities

• Previous experience as a Crossing Guard is considered an asset
• Ability to use email, cellphone technology is required
• Able to stand at a crossing for up to five hours per day in all types of weather
• Able to work in adverse weather conditions including extremes of heat, humidity, cold, rain, snow, sleet, and wind and be capable of working under all types of road conditions, exposure to traffic noise and exhaust from vehicles
• Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public
• Able to remain calm and use good judgment in emergency situations
• Able to work independently without supervision
• Valid Class "G" Ontario Driver's License
• Must provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening Check

What we offer to staff

• Compensation : We offer competitive pay that reflects the responsibilities of the position , including a daily Rover premium and a bi-weekly gas mileage premium.
• Hours of Work : This is a non-union position that works approximately 12 hours per week and depends on crossing location. School Crossing Guards work during the school year (September - June, excludes holidays and PA days) and must be available to work shifts between the hours of 7:30 am - 4:00 pm Monday - Friday, exact times are based on crossing guard location, but range from 2 to 4.5 hours per day. School Crossing Guards are required to be at their assigned crossing site in the morning, during lunchtime and after school.
