Overview
A Consultant Ophthalmologist is responsible for diagnosing, treating, and managing a wide range of ocular diseases and visual disorders in outpatient and inpatient settings.
The role involves performing advanced ophthalmic surgical procedures, providing comprehensive patient care, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring compliance with DHA and UAE healthcare regulations.
The consultant is expected to maintain high clinical standards while utilizing advanced ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive eye examinations and diagnostic assessments.
- Diagnose and manage eye diseases including cataracts, glaucoma, retinal disorders, refractive errors, corneal diseases, and ocular infections.
- Perform ophthalmic surgical procedures such as:
- Cataract surgery
- Glaucoma surgery
- Retinal procedures
- Refractive surgeries
- Minor ophthalmic procedures
- Interpret diagnostic investigations including OCT, retinal imaging, visual field testing, slit-lamp examination, and fundoscopic evaluation.
- Develop individualized treatment and management plans for patients.
- Provide pre-operative evaluation and post-operative follow-up care.
- Educate patients and families regarding eye health, preventive care, and treatment options.
- Collaborate with optometrists, neurologists, endocrinologists, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals for multidisciplinary care.
- Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical records and clinical documentation.
- Participate in clinical audits, CME activities, research, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Supervise and mentor junior doctors, residents, and allied healthcare staff.
- Ensure adherence to DHA regulations, hospital protocols, infection control policies, and international clinical standards.
Qualifications & Requirements
- MBBS or equivalent medical degree recognized by UAE authorities.
- Master’s Degree / MD / MS / DNB / FRCS / Arab Board or equivalent qualification in Ophthalmology.
- Minimum 3–5 years of post-specialty or consultant-level experience in a reputed hospital or eye care center.
- Expertise in advanced ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical procedures.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Commitment to evidence-based practice and continuous professional development.
Preferred Skills
- Expertise in microsurgery and modern ophthalmic technologies.
- Experience with LASIK, retinal surgeries, or pediatric ophthalmology is an advantage.
- Leadership and mentoring capabilities.
- Strong clinical decision-making and patient management skills.
- Familiarity with EMR systems and healthcare accreditation standards.
