We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced

Consultant In Critical Care Medicine

to join our multidisciplinary team in Abu Dhabi.

The successful candidate will provide expert care for critically ill adult patients requiring intensive monitoring, advanced life support, and complex medical management.

The Consultant will lead ICU services, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and ensure the delivery of evidence-based, patient-centered care in accordance with international best practices and the Department of Health (DOH) Abu Dhabi regulations.

The role includes the management of medical, surgical, trauma, and post-operative critically ill patients, participation in rapid response and code blue teams, and contribution to quality improvement, education, and research.

Key Responsibilities**- Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and management of critically ill adult patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
  • Lead multidisciplinary rounds and develop individualized treatment plans.
  • Manage patients requiring advanced organ support, including mechanical ventilation, vasopressor therapy, renal replacement therapy, and extracorporeal therapies where applicable.
  • Provide consultation for critically ill patients across inpatient departments and the Emergency Department.
  • Participate in rapid response, medical emergency, and Code Blue teams.
  • Perform daily ICU rounds and ensure continuity of patient care.
  • Coordinate patient admission, transfer, and discharge from the ICU.
  • Interpret laboratory, radiological, and hemodynamic monitoring data.
  • Maintain comprehensive and timely documentation within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Procedural Responsibilities
  • Perform and supervise procedures including, but not limited to:
  • Endotracheal intubation and airway management
  • Mechanical ventilation (invasive and non-invasive)
  • Central venous catheter insertion
  • Arterial line placement
  • Ultrasound-guided vascular access
  • Chest tube insertion
  • Bronchoscopy (where credentialed)
  • Percutaneous tracheostomy (where credentialed)
  • Temporary dialysis catheter insertion
  • Hemodynamic monitoring
  • Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS)

• Patient Care Responsibilities

  • Deliver evidence-based, patient-centered intensive care.
  • Communicate effectively with patients' families regarding prognosis, treatment options, and goals of care.
  • Obtain informed consent in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Coordinate care with medical, surgical, anesthesia, infectious disease, nephrology, cardiology, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and rehabilitation teams.
  • Support end-of-life care discussions and ethical decision-making when appropriate.
  • Administrative Responsibilities
  • Participate in departmental meetings and hospital committees.
  • Assist in ICU service development and strategic planning.
  • Support compliance with Department of Health (DOH), Joint Commission International (JCI), and hospital standards.
  • Participate in consultant on-call and ICU coverage schedules.
  • Ensure adherence to hospital policies and clinical governance requirements.

• Teaching & Research

  • Supervise and mentor specialist physicians, residents, interns, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities.
  • Contribute to clinical research, publications, and presentations.
  • Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings, journal clubs, and educational conferences.
  • Promote evidence-based critical care practice.

• Quality & Patient Safety

+ Lead quality improvement initiatives within the ICU.

+ Monitor clinical outcomes and key performance indicators.

+ Participate in infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship programs.

+ Report adverse events and implement corrective actions.

+ Ensure compliance with ICU safety bundles and international best practices.

+ Participate in accreditation and clinical audit activities.

Requirements

  • ****Qualifications & Requirements****
  • Essential
  • + Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS/MBChB or equivalent).
  • + Completion of an accredited residency in Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, or another recognized primary specialty.
  • + Fellowship or Board Certification in Critical Care Medicine (Adult Intensive Care) from a recognized international board.
  • Examples include:
  • Arab Board in Critical Care Medicine
  • American Board of Internal Medicine - Critical Care Medicine
  • Royal College of Physicians (UK) - CCT in Intensive Care Medicine
  • FRCA with Intensive Care CCT
  • Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Critical Care Medicine)
  • College of Intensive Care Medicine (Australia & New Zealand)
  • European Diploma in Intensive Care (or equivalent)
  • Experience
  • + Minimum 5-8 years of post-board certification experience as a Consultant in Critical Care Medicine (or as required for DOH Consultant eligibility).
  • + Experience working in tertiary care or multidisciplinary hospitals with adult intensive care services.
  • + Experience in medical, surgical, trauma, and post-operative critical care.
  • + Experience with advanced ventilatory support, sepsis management, and multi-organ failure is essential.
  • + Licensing Requirements
  • Current Department of Health (DOH) Abu Dhabi Consultant License or eligibility to obtain one.
  • Successful completion of DataFlow Primary Source Verification and UAE credentialing requirements.
  • ****Preferred Candidate Profile****
  • Fellowship training in Neurocritical Care, Cardiac Critical Care, Trauma Critical Care, ECMO, or Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS).
  • Certification in ACLS, ATLS, FCCS, or equivalent advanced life support courses.
  • Experience in ECMO and extracorporeal life support programs.
  • Academic teaching and research experience.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
