This hands-on role supports current products and future designs, with a focus on component availability, cost competitiveness, and supply-chain resilience.
Responsibilities
- Assess component selections for existing products, new designs, and design changes; identify suitable alternate manufacturers, vendors, and replacement parts.
- Qualify second sources using technical analysis and bench testing; build alternate sourcing options for continuity, competitive quotes, and cost reduction.
- Work with design engineers early to favor components with multiple viable sources and challenge avoidable sourcing, lifecycle, and supply risks.
- Document technical rationale and support management review for necessary single-source components.
- Evaluate specifications, performance, compatibility, availability, and manufacturer data; record evaluations, alternatives, test results, and decisions.
- Collaborate across hardware, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to address shortages, obsolescence, and component issues.
- Develop market knowledge and support documentation and component-control practices for scaled and contract manufacturing.
Education and experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent technical education and relevant practical experience.
- Approximately 5 or more years in electronics design, components engineering, component selection, or a closely related hardware engineering role.
- Strong electronic component knowledge, including ability to assess technical and application suitability; hands-on analog electronics experience.
- Experience with component manufacturers, distributors, vendors, supply chains, and qualification of alternate components or second sources.
- Bench-testing experience and comfort using electronic laboratory equipment to validate performance and compatibility.
- Strong technical documentation skills.
Additional qualifications and attributes
- Hardware product development or electronics manufacturing experience is strongly preferred.
- RF electronics experience is an asset; a P.Eng. designation is an asset but not required.
- The employer seeks practical technical judgment, constructive communication, collaboration across functions, persistence, organization, attention to detail, and ability to balance technical, availability, lifecycle, cost, and business needs.
Work location
- The position is based in Burnaby, British Columbia, with a preference for on-site work.
Compensation and benefits
- The employer describes competitive salary plus variable compensation based on performance targets and business objectives.
- Benefits include medical, dental, and vision plans, flexible spending accounts for healthcare and dependent care, and paid time off.
