Role overview

Clinical care and leadership

• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for residents.
• Lead care staff and promote residents’ privacy, dignity, choice, autonomy, and safety.
• Identify risks and poor-quality care and discuss action with the Home Manager.
• Communicate with residents and families, and coordinate admissions, discharges, and continuity of care.
• Work with GPs, hospitals, pharmacists, and the wider multidisciplinary team; advocate for residents where needed.
• Lead during emergencies when senior staff are absent or until specialist help arrives.

Home management and staff development

• In the Home Manager’s or Senior Nurse’s absence, oversee home operations and staffing while maintaining a safe environment.
• Contribute to staff induction, mentorship, teaching, and supervision.
• Keep accurate care records, follow the complaints policy, and support Deprivation of Liberty Authorisation applications.

Clinical standards and governance

• Follow home policies and the Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures.
• Understand the Health and Social Care Act 2014, CQC standards, and NMC Code of Conduct.
• Manage medicines in line with home policy and NMC and CQC guidance, including controlled drugs.
• Maintain a professional portfolio for revalidation alongside a PIN number.
• Follow health and safety, infection control, hygiene, and emergency procedures; report incidents.

Quality improvement

• Participate in internal audits and other quality systems to maintain and continuously improve care standards.
• Keep up to date with relevant research and practice developments and attend identified study days or mandatory training.
