Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled Calibration and Measurement Standards Specialist to manage the calibration, testing, and maintenance of measurement standards. This position will be responsible for conducting cross-checks, proficiency testing, analyzing equipment failure trends, and ensuring compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing calibration procedures, providing technical assistance, and leading quality assurance programs to maintain accuracy and reliability in all equipment and measurement systems.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct Measurement Standard Equipment Cross-Check:
- Perform regular cross-checks of measurement equipment to ensure accurate calibration and consistency.
- Use transfer standards to compare and verify measurement instruments, ensuring conformity to national or international standards.
- Conduct proficiency testing and inter-laboratory comparison tests to verify measurement accuracy and consistency.
- Identify and address discrepancies through corrective actions and continuous improvement practices.
2. Develop Test and Calibration Procedures:
- Write and maintain calibration procedures based on NCSLI RP and SOP standards.
- Differentiate between manufacturer’s manuals and OEM manuals to ensure accurate procedures and methodologies.
- Select and define appropriate test and calibration methods for equipment and measurement instruments.
- Develop and maintain both non-standard and laboratory-developed methods for calibration when necessary.
3. Analyze Equipment Failure Trends:
- Evaluate the reliability of measurement equipment and analyze failure trends to identify areas for improvement.
- Declare out-of-tolerance conditions and determine appropriate calibration intervals.
- Issue out-of-calibration reports and evaluate non-conformance work.
- Apply decision rules to declare in or out-of-tolerance conditions and recommend actions to resolve issues.
4. Perform Quality Promotions:
- Understand and implement ISO/IEC 17025 standards and accreditation programs.
- Work with accreditation bodies (e.g., ILAC, NPL, NCSL, A2LA) to ensure laboratory compliance with regulatory standards.
- Perform uncertainty calculations, analyze uncertainty data, and develop uncertainty budgets and spreadsheets in compliance with GUM (The Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement).
- Adjust calibration intervals based on historical or statistical data methods.
- Conduct internal audits, quality assurance testing, and quality checks on all primary standards.
5. Provide Technical Assistance and Guidance:
- Guide and assist metrology lab personnel in the proper use and utilization of primary and secondary standards.
- Perform reliability testing for primary standards and track trends and historical data.
- Supervise, train, and mentor lab personnel, ensuring high standards of operation and calibration practices.
- Translate equipment application methods for staff and offer on-the-job training for calibration techniques.
6. Develop and Maintain Equipment Testing and Calibration Automation:
- Understand automated calibration systems and tools (e.g., MET CAL) and how they apply to laboratory operations.
- Maintain and develop automated calibration systems to improve efficiency and reliability in the testing and calibration process.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Proven experience in calibration, metrology, or related field with an understanding of measurement standards and practices.
- Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards and the regulatory environment for calibration.
- Strong analytical skills, with experience in uncertainty calculations, trend analysis, and reliability testing.
- Ability to develop and maintain test and calibration procedures and methods.
- Experience working with calibration and measurement software and tools.
- Strong communication, training, and mentoring skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the integrity of calibration processes.

- Comfortable working in a laboratory environment and handling precision instruments.
