About Spartan Controls

Spartan Controls provides data management, industrial automation, valves, measurement, and control solutions for process industries in Western Canada and beyond.

Its markets include mining, power, oil and gas, municipal, pulp and paper, and chemical industries.

The company describes its focus as customer outcomes through applied automation that improves safety, reliability, operations, and productivity.

Role overview

Develop new greenfield power opportunities for Emerson's Ovation portfolio across Western Canada.

The role targets power generation, utilities, BESS, microgrids, utility infrastructure, and data center power systems, including demand driven by AI and data center growth.

The position is based in Calgary or Edmonton and reports to the Manager, Process Systems and Software.

Power-industry experience and technical aptitude are priorities; Ovation and specialized automation knowledge can be developed through training and collaboration.

Role and responsibilities

  • Develop and execute market-growth strategies for new Ovation KOB1 Power opportunities across Western Canada.
  • Identify and qualify power generation, utility, BESS, microgrid, and data center power infrastructure projects, including eligible new builds and expansions.
  • Build relationships with utilities, owner/operators, developers, EPC firms, consultants, and OEMs; engage project stakeholders early to influence specifications.
  • Position Ovation, Ovation Green SCADA, EMS, and related solutions, working with specialists on automation architecture, plant controls, SCADA, energy management, and grid integration.
  • Understand customer objectives, translate power-industry needs into business value, and coordinate technical support.
  • Support account teams with strategic pursuit and capture plans and consultative selling through complex, long sales cycles.
  • Monitor utility developments, power-generation investment, AI and data center growth, and emerging energy infrastructure to build a pipeline.
  • Coordinate referrals with the modernization and competitive-displacement team to ensure clear opportunity ownership and a consistent customer experience.

Required qualifications

  • Engineering degree, technical diploma, or equivalent industry experience.
  • At least five years of power-industry experience in power generation, utility operations, power infrastructure, or business development serving these markets.
  • Strong understanding of power generation, plant operations, and customer operational, reliability, resiliency, and regulatory priorities.
  • Strong technical aptitude and willingness to learn Ovation and related power automation solutions with technical specialists.
  • Ability to build relationships, influence complex projects and long sales cycles, and translate customer needs into business opportunities.
  • Strong presentation, communication, and consultative selling skills; confidence engaging plant personnel, engineers, consultants, and executives.
  • Entrepreneurial work ethic, a customer-first focus, valid Class 5 driver's licence, and ability to travel regularly.

Assets

  • Experience with DCS, SCADA, plant controls, power automation, or EMS is an asset, not a requirement.
  • Familiarity with Ovation, Ovation Green SCADA, or competing power automation platforms is an asset.
  • Understanding of BESS, microgrids, distributed generation, and utility interconnections is an asset.
  • Ability to discuss automation architectures, control philosophies, and system integration with customers and consultants is an asset.
  • Experience with data center backup generation, mission-critical power systems, or islanded power applications is an asset.
  • Knowledge of grid synchronization, load management, dispatch, energy management, interconnection requirements, operating compliance, monitoring, reporting, or reliability standards is an asset.

Location and travel

  • The position is based in Calgary or Edmonton, Alberta.
  • Regular travel is required.
