Bridge Structural Engineer

Position

Qualifications and experience

• Required education: university degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and postgraduate degree in Structural or Bridge Engineering.
• Requires at least five years as a Bridge Engineer, including independent structural analysis, calculations, drawings, client engagement, and technical documentation.

Technical knowledge

• Specialty areas include structural design, foundation design and soil mechanics, hydraulic design, and seismic design.
• Knowledge includes structural analysis and design with concrete, steel, and composite materials; bridge types; AASHTO load analysis; hydraulics; seismic design; and bridge dynamics.
• Knowledge of international building codes, environmental regulations, safety engineering, risk management, and geotechnical conditions is specified.
• Software expertise includes AutoCAD, SAP2000, ETABS, STAAD, Revit, finite element modeling, and statistical analysis tools.

Bridge engineering duties

• Analyze structural forces, stresses, and loads to ensure bridges are safe and meet applicable standards.
• Review structural calculations and model bridges using computer software to evaluate design options.
• Inspect construction sites to check work quality against design plans and resolve issues.
• Assess existing bridges for damage, corrosion, and structural problems; prepare technical reports.
• Attend client and authority meetings and discussions.

Business and project activities

• Maintain specialist expertise through training and knowledge management; contribute to product development and best-practice sharing.
• Support commercial actions and prepare technical tender content, including scope of work, planning, and cost structure.
• Execute assignments independently or in project teams; liaise with clients, designers, and project managers.
• Manage design reviews when required in accordance with the scope and applicable quality system; report on tasks, costs, and project progress.
• Support client understanding and satisfaction, and refer commercial opportunities where appropriate.

HSE and professional development

• Follow applicable legal, Bureau Veritas, and client HSE requirements; stop work and report hazards or unsafe conditions when needed.
• Use appropriate PPE, report incidents and near misses, cooperate with investigations, and support safe working practices.
• Support project-team inductions and ongoing HSE training, and monitor adherence to applicable procedures.
• Complete appropriate professional training, read technical literature, attend courses or seminars, and progress individual competence targets.
