Backend Engineer

Role overview

Backend systems and architecture

• Design and maintain production backend services, APIs, domain models, service interfaces, and business logic.
• Build scalable workflows for loans, documents, accounts, users, permissions, vendors, and operational decisions.
• Integrate internal and third-party systems, vendor APIs, databases, files, queues, event streams, and cloud services.
• Design for idempotency, consistency, retries, failure handling, schema evolution, versioning, and backward compatibility.
• Contribute architecture standards that balance delivery speed, simplicity, reliability, security, and maintainability.

Cloud operations, reliability, and security

• Deploy and operate services on AWS, GCP, or Azure, using infrastructure as code, CI/CD, automated tests, and deployment automation.
• Monitor services using logging, tracing, metrics, alerting, and observability tools; identify and resolve production issues.
• Build for latency, availability, scalability, correctness, incident response, and production support.
• Implement authentication, authorization, permissions, audit logging, data protection, and secure service-to-service communication.
• Maintain API documentation, service ownership, runbooks, operational metrics, change management, and production readiness practices.
• Support security, privacy, auditability, compliance, and risk management in a regulated environment.

Collaboration and improvement

• Partner with Product, Engineering, Data, AI, Design, Operations, and business stakeholders to understand needs, constraints, and delivery priorities.
• Translate business and operational requirements into clean, scalable, maintainable, secure backend solutions.
• Support product teams, analysts, researchers, AI systems, operational users, and external integrations that depend on backend capabilities.
• Communicate system behavior, tradeoffs, risks, dependencies, and delivery timelines to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Continuously improve service performance and reliability.

Compensation

• Salary range is $140,000 to $240,000 USD, plus an annual bonus; compensation may vary by experience, location, and other job-related factors.
