About the resort

Sofitel Dubai The Palm is a 5-star beachfront resort on Palm Jumeirah with rooms, serviced apartments, villas, spa, fitness facilities, restaurants, bars, and lounges.

Role overview

The Assistant Chief Engineer supports resort engineering leadership and deputizes for the Director of Engineering.

The role oversees engineering services across guest, public, back-of-house, plant, and beachfront facilities.

Engineering operations and maintenance

  • Oversee daily operation, maintenance, and repair of building, MEP, and engineering systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, BMS, lifts, generators, kitchen and laundry equipment, pools, and beach infrastructure.
  • Allocate work across shifts for 24/7 coverage; manage work orders, service requests, inspections, planned preventive maintenance, and equipment records.
  • Coordinate room closures and deep maintenance; protect resort assets in the beachfront and high-humidity environment.

Safety, compliance, and sustainability

  • Ensure compliance with Dubai Civil Defence, Dubai Municipality, and DEWA requirements; maintain fire and life safety systems and enforce Permit-to-Work procedures.
  • Maintain water treatment, Legionella prevention, and pool/spa water-quality records; support audits, emergency response, and corrective actions.
  • Monitor utility consumption, optimize BMS and chiller operation, and support Accor sustainability initiatives and Dubai Sustainable Tourism requirements.

Projects, budgets, and team leadership

  • Manage contractors and AMCs; support CAPEX, renovation, and engineering projects from planning and tendering through supervision, snagging, and handover.
  • Manage stores, spare parts, and purchasing; help prepare budgets, R&M forecasts, and CAPEX plans and monitor departmental expenses.
  • Lead and develop engineering staff, manage schedules and performance, identify training needs, and support succession planning and colleague wellbeing.
  • Respond to guest engineering concerns and coordinate with Rooms, F&B, Spa, Security, Housekeeping, and Events.

Qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, or Building Services Engineering, or equivalent qualification.
  • Five to seven years of hotel or resort engineering experience, including at least two years in a senior engineering role in a 5-star luxury environment.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC and chilled water, electrical distribution, plumbing, fire and life safety systems, and BMS.
  • Familiarity with CMMS/work-order management and hotel systems such as Opera PMS; proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of Dubai Civil Defence, DEWA, and Dubai Municipality regulations; fluent written and spoken English.

Preferred experience and credentials

  • Large integrated resort experience is highly desirable; pre-opening, renovation, or GCC hospitality experience is an advantage.
  • AutoCAD reading ability, a valid UAE driving licence, NEBOSH or IOSH credentials, and energy management qualifications are preferred or advantageous.
  • French, Arabic, or additional languages are an asset.
