Job Summary
The Animal Health and Welfare Director drives and oversees the comprehensive animal health and welfare program across all species—including mammals, fish, reptiles, birds, and invertebrates—while supporting rescue and rehabilitation initiatives.
This pivotal role ensures adherence to the highest animal welfare standards and advances veterinary science within the organization.
Reporting to the Strategic Operations Management Office, you will lead a high-performing team, develop strategic plans, and manage budgets to optimize animal health outcomes.
Your expertise will shape policies, safety protocols, and operational excellence, fostering a culture of excellence in health, welfare, and conservation.
Collaborate with leadership and zoological teams to educate, innovate, and deliver impactful research and fieldwork.
Animal Health and Welfare Program Leadership
- Develop and implement a high-standard animal welfare program, aligning with global best practices and scientific advancements.
- Oversee the diagnosis, treatment, and preventative medicine for all collection animals, ensuring optimal health and well-being.
- Lead the annual budgeting process for the Animal Health Department and coordinate financial planning with zoological husbandry teams.
Rescue and Rehabilitation Support
- Collaborate with zoological teams to manage rescue programs, providing medical care and rehabilitation for rescued animals.
- Participate in fieldwork for rescues, health assessments, and research initiatives across diverse species.
Strategic Planning and Policy Development
- Define short- and long-term goals for the Animal Health and Welfare Department, contributing to organizational capital and operational planning.
- Develop and maintain safety protocols to safeguard colleagues and animals, investigating noncompliance incidents with HSE/HR.
- Monitor key performance indicators and financial metrics to ensure departmental success and accountability.
Research and Knowledge Sharing
- Conduct animal health research projects and prepare findings for presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
- Consult and educate colleagues and leadership on health, welfare, and husbandry best practices.
Team Development
- Build and lead a motivated team, fostering professional growth through resourcing and training initiatives.
- Formulate and administer departmental policies to support operational efficiency and excellence.
Essential
- Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree or Master’s Degree/postgraduate qualification in Veterinary Medicine.
- Ability to obtain a license to practice veterinary medicine in the UAE.
- 10 years of experience in a zoo, aquarium, or oceanarium organization, including post-doctoral training or 2+ years of full-time practical experience.
- 10 years in a leadership role with expertise in zoological budget development and oversight.
- Strong leadership, communication, and teamwork skills with critical thinking and advanced computer proficiency (MS Office).
- Demonstrated knowledge of professional zoo/aquarium communities, animal behavior, and conservation practices.
Desirable
- Board eligibility, Member, or Diplomat status in a recognized veterinary statutory/professional body.
