AI/ML Engineer

Role overview

Core responsibilities

• Design, build, test and deploy enterprise AI solutions and agentic workflows across Azure and Databricks.
• Develop production-quality Python, C# and SQL code using manual and specification-driven techniques.
• Build solutions using models, RAG, vector databases, knowledge graphs and MCP servers.
• Contribute across data exploration, prototyping, feature engineering, evaluation, deployment, monitoring and support.
• Design MLOps pipelines for automated training, evaluation, deployment and monitoring.
• Manage experiments, model versions and reproducibility through Databricks MLflow.
• Monitor drift, hallucination and model performance degradation.
• Apply DevOps, secure-by-design, responsible AI and human-in-the-loop practices.
• Produce technical documentation and contribute to standards, reviews, design sessions and Agile ceremonies.
• Support and mentor junior engineers.

Required qualifications

• A relevant tertiary qualification in computer science, engineering, information technology, data science, mathematics, statistics, quantitative analysis or a related discipline is required.
• At least five years of experience across software engineering, data engineering or a related technical field is required.
• At least two years of hands-on experience developing production advanced analytics, machine learning or generative AI solutions is required.
• Strong hands-on capability in Python, C#, SQL, Git-based version control, automated testing and code review is required.
• Experience with Azure, Databricks, DevOps, CI/CD, secure-by-design principles and FinOps controls is required.
• Understanding of enterprise AI and data governance controls including Unity Catalog, Microsoft Purview and Agent 365 is required.

Preferred skills

• Relevant Azure AI, Databricks, GitHub, software engineering, DevOps, security or cloud data platform certifications are highly regarded.
• AWS Bedrock, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and Copilot Studio experience is highly regarded.
• Familiarity with CrewAI, Strands Agents, Microsoft Agent Framework and specification-driven development is valued.

Work location

• The position is Australia-based, with Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane preferred.
• Occasional travel to various Downer sites may be required.
