Job Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of two to three accounting professionals through the month-end close process for Southern Company Gas.
  • Oversee and review monthly journal entries, financial transaction analyses, account reconciliations, and other accounting activities.
  • Ensure compliance with all Sarbanes-Oxley Act requirements, including the compilation of control documentation and review and approval of internal control activities performed by direct reports.
  • Assist in preparing and reviewing accounting information used for monthly management reporting.
  • Assist in preparing and reviewing accounting information included in Southern Company Gas's Quarterly Reports (Form 10-Q) and Annual Reports (Form 10-K) filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
  • Prepare and review accounting information required for other Southern Company Gas reporting obligations, including stand-alone financial statements.
  • Support financial audits for Southern Company Gas and its subsidiaries.
  • Promote innovation and develop workflow efficiencies in a fast-paced environment.
  • Invest in employee development through coaching, training, mentoring, motivation, and performance management.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on special projects and strategic initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field is required.
  • Master's degree or other advanced degree is a plus.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license or equivalent professional certification is preferred.
  • Eight or more years of accounting or related experience.
  • Strong knowledge and application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience managing month-end close processes, journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reporting activities.

Experience

  • Experience with financial transaction analysis, allocations, consolidations, cash flow reporting, and internal controls preferred.
  • Experience using Oracle Cloud preferred.
  • Knowledge of the natural gas or electric utility industry preferred.
  • Familiarity with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Chart of Accounts is a plus.
  • Prior experience coaching, mentoring, or supervising employees is preferred.
