- ****JOB DESCRIPTION****
- This role is a middle management position for supervisory coverage of the Nursing Department, other
- patient care areas, and the hospital in general.
- It is usually 24/7 coverage and requires knowledge of hospital and nursing policies and procedures to enable independent judgment in their interpretation.
- The role assists with the coordination of patient flow, patient placement, staff allocation, and other patient services through collaboration with administrative/supervisory staff, physicians, charge nurses, and ancillary support staff across all hospital departments.
- ****RESPONSIBILITIES****
- Manages and supervises nursing team after hours in order to create and maintain a high level of safe practice.
- Represents/acts as admin on-call liaison with nursing departments’ directions in their absence while maintaining a positive business practice in compliance with established policies and standards of the organization.
- Responds to all emergencies; including Internal and external disasters and all kinds of codes, clinical and non-clinical, and initiation of emergency preparedness plans for any presenting emergencies.
- Activates on-calls of specialties service staff for emergency interventions.
- Rounds actively on all Nursing units to optimize patient care, enhance patient safety, as well as empower, support and develop the staff.
- Assures that nursing resource shift allocations are based on identified needs and nursing workload measures.
- Acts as the focal point of contact for external communication to the hospital, especially SEHA/DOH.
- Maintains regular communications with bed placement and patient care units regarding bed availability and resulting patient care and/or staffing
- Coordinates and communicates plans for temporary and permanent bed openings and closures.
- Co-manages staffing after hours based on patient acuity, patient census, and available staff at a given shift.

- Provides guidance and feedback in relation to staff performance and policy adherence.
- Acts as a resource in identifying and/or resolving administrative operational problems, at a given time, reports and escalates significant issues.
- Responds to patient/family’s concerns in a timely manner, strives to resolve conflicting expectations, while preserving the best interest and integrity of all involved.
- Intervenes and give corrective action on the spot in any identified unsafe practices/situations that violate patients’ or staff’s safety and reports back to the line manager.
- Co-ordinates proper disposition of ambulance conduction.
- Manages Nurse Float pool appropriately.
- Builds relationships with staff, peers, and colleagues to support interdisciplinary and interdepartmental planning, aimed at improving patient outcomes.
- Facilitates effective communication between the patient, family, and the interdisciplinary health care team as required.
- Uses information technology to access, transmit and produce information as necessary.
- Undertakes patient and environmental risk assessments and documents corrective actions to improve patient outcomes as required.
- Supports and participates in the implementation of evidence-based practice to promote clinical knowledge and a research-based clinical practice environment.
- Oversees operational efficiency and utilization of staff resources in collaboration with unit-based leadership to ensure NHPPD targets are within the acceptable range.
- Leads the daily safety and capacity huddles.
- Monitors and supports the organizational Key Performance Indicators and Clinical
- Indicators and reinforces corrective action to improve clinical service.
- Coordinates, monitors, and reports incidents occurring after business hours and facilitates corrective or preventative action as required.
- Minimizes exposure to incidents of infection/cross-infection of patients, staff, visitors, and the public. Ensures staff adheres to the infection control policies and procedures of the
- organization
- Recognizes the necessity of continuously developing skills and acquiring additional knowledge appropriate to the position
- Participates in committees, task forces that are interdisciplinary or interdepartmental; may be required to chair, co-chair or lead such groups.
- Performs any other duties as may be assigned relevant to the basic responsibilities of the role.
- ****Accountabilities****
- Reports to CNO and leader’s daily hospital census report. Maintains reports on nursing department activity e.g. sick leave and occupancy rates.
- Provides hospital leadership with clinical and administrative reports deemed necessary.
- Addresses the immediate legal and ethical dilemmas in a professional, collaborative manner and refers to the relevant person for action.
- Ensures quality and effectiveness of nursing practice in their assigned services to make improvements as required.
- Maintains and updates a professional portfolio.
- Develops and achieves annual performance criteria/goals in conjunction with the Line manager.
- Adheres to the dress code and ensure the appearance is neat and clean.
- Maintains and updates own professional development through relevant educational activities.
- Evaluates the quality standards of nursing documentation and ensure compliance with organizational policy and standards.
- Maintains patient and environmental risk assessments and documents corrective actions to improve patient outcomes as required.
- Facilitates reporting of incidents occurring within the Organization by proper coordination and facilitating corrective action taken.
- Maintains confidentiality with regards to any information exchanged or received in the current capacity of role in accordance with facility policy
- Provides ongoing timely feedback, verbal and written anecdotes, to staff on performance.
- Anecdotes should be shared with the Nurse Manager or Director to be used as part of performance evaluation.
- ****Required:****
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in nursing OR Degree in Nursing (minimum 2 years course duration)
AND Registration as a Registered Nurse from Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, South Africa, New
Zealand, and Australia
Valid/current national license.
Bls;Acls;Pals

NLT 8 years clinical experience in appropriate & relevant healthcare settings post
qualification
NLT 2 years in Senior Charge Nurse (S.
C.N.) position, OR NLT 3 years in a Charge Nurse
